Karnataka's Home Minister G. Parameshwara informed the assembly that the Special Investigation Team (SIT) has decided to temporarily suspend excavation and digging at the site until the forensic report is received. While addressing the assembly, Parameshwara stated that they are awaiting the forensic report to identify any potential traces of chemical analysis and DNA at the scene. He emphasized that this suspension is temporary and that the SIT has the authority to make this decision, clarifying that it is not a directive from the government.
Concerns Over Allegations of Forced Burials
He also discussed a complaint regarding alleged forced burials and threats. Parameshwara mentioned that an individual approached the local police station to report receiving death threats and being coerced into burying a body. The complainant stated that he felt guilty and decided to file the report. He further noted that several individuals, including victims of sexual assault, have been buried. Following these allegations, the chairperson of the women's commission wrote a letter requesting an investigation. Parameshwara added that he subsequently spoke with Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, and they agreed to form a Special Investigation Team (SIT) for further inquiry.
Criticism of Government's Response
Central Minister Prahlad Joshi criticized the Karnataka government's handling of the situation, claiming that the Chief Minister established the SIT merely for publicity without considering the potential consequences. He suggested that the government could have conducted a basic background check on the masked individual who filed the complaint and, if the claims were valid, initiated a thorough investigation. "The SIT was formed hastily, as if the government was waiting for an opportunity. This indicates that the Congress government has an ultra-leftist mindset," he remarked.
